Hingham Cultural Council
The Hingham Cultural Council is a group of interested residents whose purpose is to support community based projects in the arts, humanities and interpretive sciences. We are a group of citizens who are appointed by the selectman to dispense public funding by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency. Artist, musicians, non-profit community groups and schools with a cultural project may apply for funding by writing a grant proposal during the grant cycle. The application process begins in September and all grants must be submitted to the Selectmen's office by October 15th of the given year, for consideration. Grant applications are available at various locations around town including the Selectmen's office. The council reviews each grant during several meetings held each fall. Each project is discussed in detail and based on our current guidelines, we select the appropriate projects for funding.
Before applying for a grant, please visit Massachusetts Cultural Council for more information.
Our Mission Statement
The Hingham Cultural Council's primary purpose is to ensure that Hingham's share of funds from the Massachusetts Cultural Council is administered fairly and equitably in the best interests of the Hingham Community. It is also the Council's mission to seek out and encourage enterprising and innovative activities in the arts that can benefit and add to the quality of life in Hingham. These activities should expose a wide range of audiences to fresh, stimulating and culturally enriching experiences. The goal Of the HCC is to raise awareness and encourage individuals, groups and organizations to apply for support toward presenting programs that will benefit Hingham and its citizens.
2010 Annual Report
The Hingham Cultural Council awarded $6,431 in 2010 to support the arts and artists in our community. Eighteen grants, ranging from $100 to $1000, were awarded. Recipients include:
• Hingham Public Library
• Hingham Downtown Association
• South Shore Education Collaborative
• Foster School and East School.
• The South Shore Conservatory,
• James Library, Norwell
• Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra
• Fine Arts Chorale
• North River Arts Society
• Old Ship Church Concert Committee
• Second Parish Art Show
• Second Parish Spring Concert
• Broad Cove Chorale
• Abigail Adams Historical Society
• Hingham Historical Society
• South Shore Art Center,
• Hingham Senior Center
• Massachusetts Audubon, South Shore Sanctuaries
This year's allotments were generous because we were able to release funds that were not claimed from previous grants. Next year the Hingham Cultural Council will not have as much money to distribute. Our council has decided that we should work to raise additional funds.
The Hingham Cultural Council's guide lines are as follows:
• All grant applicants must have a local sponsor.
• Priorities include arts and cultural events held within Hingham or the immediate area to benefit Hingham residents.
We welcome any suggestions that would improve these guidelines.
