Citizen's Fire Academy
Introduction:
The Citizen's Fire Academy is an eight-week program that informs citizens of Hingham of the services the Hingham Fire Department provides, increases fire and life safety awareness, and promotes a positive image of the department to the community. Through classroom presentations and hands-on exercises, citizens will achieve a greater understanding of the inner workings of the Hingham Fire Department.
Students will have an opportunity to meet the firefighters who protect and serve your community. Hingham Fire Department instructors who posses a wide variety of skills, training and experience will provide the instruction.
Students will tour the Bare Cove Fire Museum and one of the fire stations. There will be classes and demonstrations on firefighting protective equipment, fire prevention and investigation, fire extinguishers, emergency medical services, auto extrication, hazardous materials and fire ground operations. Participants are encouraged to participate in all practical demonstrations. However due to the voluntary nature of the program, physical limitations will not be considered a reason for exclusion from the academy.
It is imperative that all participants understand that the Citizen's fire academy is intended to be an informative experience to provide insight into how the fire department functions and what services they provide. It is not intended to train participants as firefighters or assistants at any fires. It is not the academy's intent to train participants to a level where it is safe for him/her to involve themselves in any firefighting activity.
Goals and Objectives:
- To provide residents a basic understanding of the tactics and strategies of firefighting and rescue operations.
- To provide a greater understanding of the services the Hingham Fire Department is able to provide
- To encourage academy participants to return to their families and neighborhoods and share their experiences. This will provide more safety conscious and informed citizens.
- To provide an enjoyable, interactive atmosphere in which fire department members and citizens can share information and concerns.
Requirements:
- Participants must be a minimum of eighteen years of age.
- Participants must live or work in the Town of Hingham.
- Participants must be able to commit to attend all sessions.
If you would like further information or you would like to apply to an upcoming academy, please contact Lt. Robert Keyes at 781-741-1480 or use or online information request form.
