SAFE (Student Awareness and Fire Education) Program
SAFE (Student Awareness and Fire Education) is a national fire education program. The program is geared and designed for presentation to child from pre-school through high school. With each different age group, different areas of fire and life safety are covered. No matter what age group is receiving the message, the same message is the same: The importance of fire safety.
The SAFE program is one part of the Hingham Fire Departments Fire Safety Education Program provided to the Town of Hingham. In 2005 the program was revamped and has been received very well by the school system. The program was initially done only for the Kindergarten classes. A goal was set in 2006 to double the size of the program by reaching both the Kindergarten and 2nd Grade classes. This goal was achieved with great success. A new goal has been set to continue with the expansion of the program each year so that every elementary school child has the SAFE program each school year. There is also a program in development to bring SAFE to Middle and High School students in the near future. This projected program would be a class on historic fires and the lessons learned from them.
The success of this program would not be possible without the overwhelming and enthusiastic support of the Hingham Fire Department Administration, specifically Chief Mark Duff and Deputy Chief Robert Olsson. Both of them have dedicated countless resources for the further expansion and growth of the program. The Administration from the School Department and each of the elementary schools have also shown great support for the program which has been received very well by the staff and students.
The trained SAFE instructors discuss several key elements of program when then visit the classrooms. Some of the elements are listed below:
- Stop, Drop, and Roll
- Crawl Low in Smoke
- Get Out & Stay Out
- Meeting Place Outside the House
- Do Not Hide in an Emergency
- Matches & Lighters are Not Toys
- Smoke Detectors and What They Sound Like
- Seatbelts
- Bike Helmets
- Hot Stove/Pans
- 911/Fire Alarm Box
- Firefighter in Gear
The children are given the chance to see a firefighter in full protective gear and realize we are the same people just hiding under all our protective clothing. They are also given the chance to get up close to a fire truck and explore it. Always a treat to any child it seems.
The program in 2006 consisted of four dedicated Firefighters who made the program the success it was. These dedicated individuals took time out of their busy schedules to get the training necessary to present the program in the schools. A special thanks is due to:
- Lieutenant Bob Keyes (Public Fire Education Director)
- Lieutenant Chris Dinapoli (SAFE Coordinator)
- FF/EMT Mark Melanson
- FF/Paramedic Michael Krause
- FF/Paramedic Sarah Yeaton
Thanks to this program Hingham’s students are more educated and prepared in case of an emergency.
