HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION MAY 17, 2008
The Town of Hingham, Department of Public Works is pleased to announce that a Household Hazardous Waste Collection will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 pm. on Saturday, May 17, 2008, at the Plymouth River School, off High Street. The collection is open to all Hingham residents who wish to dispose of household hazardous waste. Participants will be required to show proof of residency. Materials generated by commercial or industrial sources will not be accepted. There will be no charge for this service. Because funds have not been appropriated for a collection next year, residents are urged to take advantage of this event.
Acceptable materials include disinfectants, solvents, pesticides, poisons, cleaners, paint thinners, herbicides, chemicals, i.e., pool and photographic, mercury thermometers and thermostats, flammable liquids and oil base paints. Please DO NOT BRING explosives, radioactive materials (including smoke detectors), tires, asbestos, empty aerosol cans, gas cylinders or fire extinguishers. Also, DO NOT BRING motor oil, used oil filters, automotive batteries, antifreeze, or NiCd batteries which are accepted at designated locations at the Recycling/Transfer Facility or latex paint, which can be disposed of with regular trash, if allowed to thoroughly dry first.
Please package all materials in “sturdy boxes,” not plastic or paper bags, separate paints from other wastes. Keep wastes in their original containers and tighten any loose caps or lids.
Upon arrival at the site please remain in your vehicle and a trained staff member will assist you. Participants will be served on a first come first serve basis.
Randy Sylvester, Assistant Superintendent of Public Works, reminds residents that the purpose of this event is to prevent the improper disposal of potentially hazardous materials. Materials that could pose a risk to public health or the environment should never be poured down drains, onto the ground or disposed of at the Transfer Station. Residents are also encouraged to reduce the amount of household hazardous waste they generate by limiting the amount of hazardous materials purchased, using the product completely in accordance with the manufacturers directions, and purchasing non-hazardous alternatives whenever possible. The Town reserves the right to refuse to accept any materials and to limit the amount of materials accepted from any one individual at 60 pounds, or 30 gallons. Questions may be directed to the Department of Public Works by calling 781 741-1430.
