[ARCHIVED] Hingham to Honor Fallen Officers on Peace Officers Memorial Day

Hingham Peace Officers Memorial Day Wreath

Town Administrator Tom Mayo and Director of Veterans' Services Keith Jermyn are pleased to announce a Memorial Wreath Ceremony will be held later this month as part of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Peace Officers Memorial Day will be held on Friday, May 13, in conjunction with National Police Week. The Town of Hingham and the Hingham Veterans’ Council will hold a brief ceremony in front of the Hingham Town Hall at 1 p.m. on that same day. The wreath will be presented to members of the Hingham Police Department to show the town’s continued support and remembrance.

The wreath will be placed by Hingham Police Chief David Jones and Select Board Chair Joe Fisher. Other elected officials and invited guests will be in attendance and asked to speak.

The ceremony will pay tribute to officers who lost their lives or were injured in the line of duty. According to Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS), about 140-160 officers are killed in the line of duty each year and their families and co-workers are left to cope with the tragic loss.

“We are proud to come together each year to honor those among us who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the communities they served,” said Director Jermyn. “Our thoughts are with them, their families and their communities. These heroic individuals and their commitment to the safety of others will not be forgotten.”

About Peace Officers Memorial Day

Peace Officers Memorial Day came into effect on Oct. 1, 1961, when Congress asked the President to designate May 15 to honor law enforcement officers. President John F. Kennedy signed the bill into law, and each year, the President of the United States proclaims May 15 as Peace Officers’ Memorial Day and the calendar week of each year during which May 15 occurs as National Police Week.
