The Town of Hingham is reminding senior residents that the deadline to apply for a Senior Means-Tested Tax Emption for Fiscal Year 2025 is Tuesday, September 3rd. The annual application deadline is usually September 1, but as that date falls on a Sunday this year and is followed by the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 2, the deadline has been moved back to September 3.
A Senior Means-Tested Tax Exemption for Hingham seniors who meet certain income and asset criteria was first approved by the Hingham Town Meeting in 2019. The goal of the new tax exemption is to provide targeted property tax relief to older homeowners and help them continue to be able to afford to live in Hingham.
The maximum tax-exemption that will be applied to the property tax bill that eligible seniors receive in December 2024 is $2,590, which is double that from prior years.
“The Senior Means-Tested Exemption can be received in addition to another statutory exemption (if eligible), and can provide a significant reduction in tax burden,” explained Josh Ross, Chair of the Hingham Board of Assessors, and a member of the Town’s Council on Aging. “We’ve tried to spread the word through targeted mailings, social media, and Hingham Center for Active Living events, but we also appreciate residents’ help reaching out to their neighbors and friends in town about this important resource.”
