[ARCHIVED] Hingham Memorial Day Remembrance Held as U.S. Begins Rev250 Commemorations

Flags on Town Hall Lawn

The Town of Hingham remembered and honored those who died in service to their country on this Memorial Day in the first year of the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution and Independence.

Organized by the Hingham Department of Veterans’ Services and the Hingham Veterans’ Council, yesterday's ceremony was held at Town Hall and featured a keynote address by Tom Hagstrom, a United States Army Veteran and West Point graduate.

Select Board Chair William Ramsey also offered remarks and Town Clerk Carol Falvey read the names of those Hingham veterans who passed away since Memorial Day last year.  The ceremony was led by Town Moderator Michael Puzo and featured performances by the Hingham High School Band and Concert Chorale.

After the main portion of the ceremony, a wreath was placed at the Veterans’ Memorial in front of Town Hall in honor of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.  Following the ceremony, local Veterans and their families were invited to lunch at Hingham's GAR Memorial Hall.

Hingham is no stranger to high-ranking military officers among its citizens. Major General Benjamin Lincoln of Hingham was commissioned as a Major General in the Continental Army, 250 years ago. General Lincoln, who was severely wounded in the pivotal American victory over the British at Saratoga during the American Revolution, is prominently buried in Hingham Cemetary.  The Lincoln House at 181 North Street is owned by the Hingham Historical Society and is open to the public.

Hingham will hold several Rev250 events throughout 2025 and 2026.
