[ARCHIVED] Weir River Water System Five Year Anniversary

Weir River Water System 5th Anniversary

August 1, 2025 marked the five-year anniversary of the Town of Hingham’s acquisition of the Weir River Water System.

The Town has remained committed to investing in the water system, allocating over $14 Million capital funding for infrastructure, fire protection, treatment plant upgrades, process improvements, and metering system programs.

Capital Improvement Projects are key to the water system and the customers we serve. Completed work includes:

  • replacing 23,500 linear feet (LF) of water main, 12,745 LF which was recommendations from our master plan,
  • Adding 6,000 LF of water main to create loops and additional service,
  • Installing 84 additional hydrants,
  • Replacing over 130 aged hydrants
  • Adding 18 additional gate valves

At our Water Treatment Facility, we have:

  • replaced aged underdrain systems in our four filters
  • replaced our sludge drying centrifuge units with new high efficiency models
  • installed new boilers, pumps, valves, chemical systems
  • inspected, cleaned and rehabilitated all sources
  • installed new filter media. WRWS Water Tower

A recent Presentation to the Hingham and Hull Select Boards outlines leak history and water main age, and displays improved main break averages since taking ownership.

Our work is only just beginning. Over the next five years, we will continue to invest in improvements with some very important projects. Future projects include:

  • New 1.0 million gallon water storage tank in Hull
  • Complete rehabilitation of Turkey Hill Tank
  • New pump station to service our customers,
  • Replace an additional 8 miles of water main throughout the system.

We are committed to our customers in all three communities we serve, Hingham, Hull and North Cohasset.  In 2026, we will be transitioning billing and customer service to a partnership with the Hingham Municipal Light Plant (HMLP), with members of our community readily available to respond to customer needs.  We would like to thank the town governments for their support, our partner VEOLIA North America for their operation and maintenance service, and we look forward to the next five years.
