[ARCHIVED] Road Construction Detours - Rt. 228 - September 2021

The Town of Hingham will be cold planing (milling) and paving approximately 1.7 miles of Route 228 as shown on the image. The limits of work run from the intersection of Short Street (Rt. 228) and School Street to the intersection of Hull Street (Rt. 228) and East Street.

All scheduling dates are dependent on weather conditions and subject to change. Please be sure to check our Town’s website for any updates to this schedule.

You will experience travel delays during this time. Traffic detours will be active when the work is occurring

Detours – Work Between Hull Street/MBTA Crossing and 3A

On certain days, work on East Street between Hull Street and Route 3A may begin as early as 7:00 AM. Traffic will be managed by detail officers within the construction area. If necessary due to the extent of work, or volume of traffic, this section of road may be closed to one or both directions of travel for periods of time in order to maintain safe travel and a safe work zone.

Detours – Work Between Route 3A and Main Street

The work and associated traffic detours will begin preparations at 8:30 AM and may be operational as early as 9:00 AM. Work will conclude at or before 7:00 PM, but typically at or before 5:30 PM.

The Northbound 228 Detour follows Main Street north to Water Street, north to the intersection of Summer Street (Route 3A), and through the rotary to Chief Justice Cushing Highway, concluding at the intersection of Routes 3A (CJCH) and 228 (East Street).

Southbound traffic will flow through an open lane which will be maintained through the active construction zone. Residents who live along this corridor will be required to utilize the detour and access their property by traveling from Route 3A during the anticipated work hours.

To access East Elementary School for afternoon pickup, parents and buses may use Summer Street off Route 3A or East Street from the intersection of Route 3A, and proceed southbound on East Street to enter Collins Road and the school driveway. Passenger cars leaving East Elementary will be directed southbound on Route 228 and may continue south on 228, or use Kilby Street and Summer Street to return to 3A.

Kilby Street between Summer Street and Rockland Street will be closed to through traffic due to MassDOT construction of Route 3A/Kilby Street intersection improvements.

The paving process for these roads will require at least ten (10) working days and will take place over a three week period beginning September 20th.
