[ARCHIVED] Health Department Welcomes New Contract Social Worker

Hingham Town Hall

Town Administrator Tom Mayo is pleased to announce that the Hingham Health Department is welcoming a new social worker to its team.

Justin Cancel began his new role as a contract social worker on Wednesday, Jan. 25.

Cancel will be available to the town's residents for assistance with a variety of need-based referrals. These referrals include help finding therapists, psychiatrists, primary care physicians and substance use treatment programs. Cancel will also be able to assist with applications for food benefits (Food stamps/WIC), housing resources, clothing support and crisis guidance.

This new position fills a deficit for residential assistance outside of Town Hall hours. Cancel's position focuses on preventative measures to help reduce the likelihood of difficult situations escalating into crises. Cancel will be available via text and phone call from 5-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Cancel will also be available in-person on Tuesdays, starting Jan. 31,  from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Hingham Public Library, 66 Leavitt St.

Cancel’s role is not intended to replace the resources for those in crisis.  Residents with immediate needs should reach out to one of the following resources:

  • 988 – National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline - call or text this number
  • 911 - call to reach emergency services dispatch
  • The Hingham Police Department’s Community Crisis Response Clinician can be reached at (781) 749-1212 ext. 2222 or walsha@hpd.org

Please allow for up to 24 hours for a response. If you or someone you know is in immediate crisis, utilize first responders or the crisis line.

Cancel can be reached via text or call at (781) 783-2617 or by email at cancelj@hingham-ma.gov.
