[ARCHIVED] Hingham Commemorates the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution with Community-Wide Celebratio

Hingham REV250 Logo

Hingham will kick off its own REVOLUTION 250 celebrations with Revolutionary Weekend May 17-18, 2025, celebrating ordinary people who did extraordinary things and unwittingly became authors of American History.

After the first "shot heard 'round the world" on April 19, 1775 ignited the American Revolution 250 years ago, the New England countryside was on high alert. In Hingham, 154 men had mustered to fight at Concord and Lexington and were now busy building fortifications and defending the coast. By the end of the war six years later, hundreds of Hingham residents would take up arms; those who stayed behind became essential to the war effort supplying the army.

To commemorate this incredible milestone, The Town of Hingham, the Hingham Historical Society, Discover Hingham, and the Hingham Militia have partnered to launch the inaugural Hingham Revolutionary Weekend! This family-friendly event will feature:

  • Guided tours of Hingham Historical Society’s historic properties including the home of Revolutionary General, Benjamin Lincoln
  • Huzzah Hingham! Walking Tours of Revolutionary Hingham with expert guides
  • Fife and drum performances in the streets of downtown
  • Springham! An Outdoor Concert Celebrating Community featuring local bands and breweries
  • A Taste of Americana pop-up featuring Little Wolf Bake Shop and Ditty & Dough
  • Special MBTA ferry service from Boston to Hingham
  • And a lot more!

The weekend culminates in the 250th commemorative reenactment of the Battle of Grape Island, the “second” battle of the American Revolution. Featuring the Hingham Militia and other local reenactors, commemoration activities will conclude with the traditional “Ballad of Grape Island” singalong and cupcakes provided by the Town of Hingham and the Hingham Historical Society.

History is where we live, work, play, learn, and gather. It is the foundation of our community and part of our daily lives. Join us and celebrate Hingham’s revolutionary spirit!
