[ARCHIVED] Remember the Battle of Grape Island on May 20th!

Battle of Grape Island

REMEMBER THE BATTLE OF GRAPE ISLAND!

  • On May 21, 1775 a party of British Soldiers and Marines sailed two sloops and a schooner to Grape Island to obtain supplies from the farm of Loyalist Elisha Leavitt.
  • Hingham's Militia responded and began firing on the British from shore until the incoming tide allowed them to row out to the island.
  • As reinforcements arrived from other South Shore towns, the British escaped from the other side of Grape Island.
  • Thus ended the second battle of the American Revolution and the first battle in what became known as the "Provision Wars".
