Docks, Piers and Floats

The Conservation Commission has adopted specific regulations and performance standards for private docks and piers which can be found under Section 23.4 of the Hingham Wetland Regulations. The intent of the Commission is the limit the number and size of new piers to reduce adverse and cumulative adverse effects upon the wetland values of inland and coastal resource areas including shellfish habitat and salt marsh.  Shared docks among properties are strongly encouraged in suitable areas.  When considering a new dock or maintenance or repair of an existing dock, please contact the Conservation office to review the proposed project and permitting requirements. Docks on tidelands or non-tidal rivers and streams may also require a Chapter 91 License from the Department of Environmental Protection.  The following websites provide additional guidelines for dock construction and information on potential impacts to marine fisheries and habitats resulting from docks, piers, and floats.
