MWRA Water Capacity
Hingham is one of seven South Shore communities currently taking part in a regional study to explore the feasibility of joining the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA).
Joining Hingham in the study are Rockland, Abington, Norwell, Hanover, Cohasset, and Scituate (the Towns). The study was prompted by the MWRA‘s 2023 announcement that 51 million gallons per day (MGD) are available, as a result of decreasing water demand. Of these, the MWRA is making 20 MGD available to communities new to the MWRA system. The MWRA is also waiving entry fees through December 2027.
In November 2023, the Towns entered into an MOU, to engage in joint initial research to verify current water system demands, current capacity of each system, future water system demands, and infrastructure required to access MWRA water.
In March 2024, the Towns contracted with Environmental Partners, LLC to coordinate and complete this research work. Results will help each community decide if a full application to access MWRA water capacity is something they want to complete by 2027. Research results are expected in the fall of 2024.
This group of South Shore towns initiated the regional study to allow ample time to assess their own needs for water and infrastructure upgrades to access MWRA water. For Hingham, the work will assess potential for supporting economic development in its southern commercial districts, proximate to Route 3. This assessment will help each community decide if a full application to access MWRA water capacity is something they want to complete by 2027.
The Towns are coordinating their work with the Town of Weymouth, which is committed to accessing MWRA water capacity.
The Towns are using American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, available through Plymouth County, to support the effort.
